CHAPTER ELEVEN

After pulling into my driveway, I put the car in park and shut it off. My eyes burn like a son of a bitch from being up almost an entire twenty-four hours.

I’m getting too old for this shit, I think to myself as I crawl out of the driver’s seat.

“Hey.”

I’m not surprised by his sudden appearance. I saw him follow me home from a distance. Just like I noticed the moment he pulled into his driveway.

“Hi,” I say as I watch Blaze approach with his hands in his pockets. “What’s up?”

“I never got to talk to you today. Thought I would see how your night went?”

I tilt my head toward the house and start walking toward it. “Outside of one asshole, it was all right. No one gave me any issues. You?” I ask as I unlock the door.

Blaze follows me in and locks the door behind him. “A few hot-headed assholes, but nothing out of the ordinary.”

“Good.” I sigh as I kick off my shoes. “It’s been a while since we’ve had a drama-free race.”

“No kidding. We didn’t even have to call the cops this time,” he says as he kicks off his shoes, then makes his way over to the couch.

“Make yourself comfortable, why don’t you?” I don’t hide the sass in my tone.

“Can you not?” He sounds exhausted.

“Can I not what?” I ask as I take a seat next to him on the couch.

Blaze reaches down and grabs my feet, putting them in his lap. Slowly he takes off my socks and starts to rub my feet, making me moan.

“I miss you, okay? I know things have been weird, but I fucking miss you. You’re my best friend, Hannah. You will always be my best friend even when you finally give in and admit that you are mine. You will be my girl and my best friend.”

His words jump-start my heart. He always knows what to say. He remembers everything I’ve ever said to him. He knows I’ve always wanted my husband to also be my best friend.

“I miss you too,” I whisper, letting myself feel the emotions running through me.

“So let’s just hang out. Talk, catch each other up. I feel like I don’t even know what is going on in your life anymore.”

“I’m so tired, Blaze,” I murmur as I sink farther into the couch.

“Then fall asleep. I’ll carry you to bed.”

“And be gone by the time I wake up,” I say bitterly.

“I’ll be here. Let me take care of you. You wanted actions. Let me give them to you,” he promises.

We fall silent for a few minutes. It’s not awkward at all. We’ve always had this connection where we don’t need to say anything at all.

“How did we end up here?” I ask quietly with my eyes closed, unable to look at him.

“Because I’m a fuck-up.” His tone is self-deprecating.

“No, you’re not.” I frown but keep my eyes closed.

“I am, but that’s okay. I know all I’ve done is mess up the last few years where you’re concerned.
